Have you ever realized that probiotics might be a scam?
1 in 3 American women take probiotics for vaginal health. But if they actually worked, why does the smell keep coming back?
Why do you find yourself back at the pharmacy every few months buying another bottle, another suppository, another round of the same treatments that "worked" before?
My names Dr. Sarah Weng and I've been researching women's sexual health for over 12 years.
And what I'm about to share with you is going to make you question everything your doctor told you about treating vaginal odor.
Because if you've ever wondered why it keeps coming back, why it's difficult to completely get rid of, even if the smell is slightly different, the underlying reason it persists remains the same.
So let me explain why this happens.
But first I need you to understand something that the medical establishment doesn't want you to know.
And they never could, at least not on their own. But not because they're bad bacteria or because you bought the wrong brand or even because you didn't take them long enough...
They can't work because of something called biofilm.
You see, when bad bacteria overgrow in the vagina, they build protective shields around themselves called Biofilms. And think of this like the plaque that builds up on teeth if they aren't brushed.
So when a probiotic is taken, the good bacteria can't reach the tissue to colonize as they bounce off the biofilm surface and the bad bacteria underneath just keep growing, protected by the shield.
But what really makes my blood boil, is the people selling probiotics know this. Because the research has been published for years.
Nobody tells you this because there's no money in curing the problem, only in someone coming back month after month to buy more probiotics that can't penetrate the biofilm. — Dr. Sarah Weng
So heres what they wont tell you about when antibiotics or boric acid are taken. Because antibiotics kill all bacteria
...both good and bad.
So they'll wipe out the bad surface bacteria and provide relief for a few days. But the bacteria hiding under the biofilm survive.
Because the biofilm makes them 10-1,000x more resistant to antibiotics. So the antibiotics clear things temporarily, but they also kill all the good bacteria.
But Boric acid works differently as it raises vaginal pH to create an environment where bad bacteria can't thrive as easily.
And for a few days, maybe even a week, there might be improvement. But boric acid doesn't break down biofilm, it just temporarily shifts the pH, so the bacteria protected under the biofilm wait it out.
And as soon as pH returns to normal, from stress, next cycle or just with time, they start growing back. Because the biofilm was never addressed.
And this is why women tell me they've done 10, 15, 20 rounds of boric acid and the smell keeps coming back.
And it's not that boric acid doesn't work but that it's treating the symptom (pH imbalance) instead of the root cause (biofilm protecting the bacteria).
And you can't kill bacteria you can't reach. — Dr. Sarah Weng
Well we have to break down the biofilm first before introducing any probiotics or treatments.
And there's only one enzyme that can do this, it's not an antibiotic or a pharmaceutical drug but a natural enzyme from pineapple stems called bromelain.
And I know what you're thinking...
Go ahead and laugh but a 2024 peer reviewed study proved that bromelain can dissolve up to 98% of vaginal biofilm structure.
But specifically bromelain from the stems where the enzyme concentration is 40% higher.
So once the biofilm is broken down, not only is the bad bacteria exposed so the immune system can finally deal with them, but the good bacteria can actually colonize the tissue properly to rebalance the microbiome.
But what's the best probiotic to use once the biofilm is broken down? Well most probiotics fail for these two reasons.
The only type of probiotic that solves both problems is spore-forming probiotics.
Spore-forming probiotics like Bacillus coagulans have a protective shell around them. This shell protects them from stomach acid so nearly 100% survive the journey to your gut.
And because they're designed to survive in harsh environments, they can colonize and thrive even in low-glycogen vaginal tissue.
So if you're over 35, or dealing with perimenopause, or have tried probiotics before and they didn't work, a spore-forming probiotic is the only type that will actually survive and establish healthy balance.

If you're dealing with a fishy smell, especially one that gets worse after sex or during your period, this is caused by an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria like Gardnerella vaginalis.
And these bacteria thrive when vaginal pH rises above 4.5 where they produce amines, which are the compounds that create that distinct fishy odor.
But what's happening underneath is these bacteria have built biofilm colonies throughout the vaginal canal.
So when taking probiotics, antibiotics or using boric acid, you might notice the smell improves for a few days as the surface bacteria die off. But the bacteria under the biofilm survive.
And within 1-2 weeks, they've repopulated and the smell is back. So the only way to stop this cycle is to dissolve the biofilm first.
But once the biofilm is broken down with bromelain, and we introduce spore-forming probiotics that actually survive stomach acid to reach the vaginal tissue, the good bacteria can colonize properly.
And most women notice the fishy smell completely gone within 5-7 days.
If you're dealing with a musty, stale smell that reminds you of an old bathroom or musty towels, this is caused by a high-diversity microbiome with bacteria like Actinobacteria.
And these bacteria produce waste compounds that create that musty, aged odor, often accompanied by a slight yellowish or grayish discharge.
So the problem is the same, these bacteria are protected by biofilm. Meaning probiotics slide right off and boric acid might help temporarily, but the bacteria hiding under the biofilm survive and regrow.
And because this type of bacteria produces biofilm that's particularly thick, it's even more resistant to standard treatments.
So we need to break down that biofilm barrier first. But once we do and restore the good bacteria population with probiotics that survive to colonize,
the musty smell clears up within 7-10 days.
If you're dealing with a sharp ammonia or urine-like smell, this is caused by bacteria like Prevotella bivia that break down urea (from your urine) into ammonia gas.
Now this smell is often strongest after using the bathroom or at the end of the day. And it can make you feel like you smell like pee even right after showering.
But it's not a hygiene problem at all, just a bacterial problem.
And these bacteria are protected by biofilm just like the others. So when you take probiotics, boric acid or antibiotics, they can't reach the tissue to colonize.
And the Prevotella bivia bacteria stay protected under their biofilm shield continuing to produce ammonia.
But once we break down the biofilm before introducing good bacteria, the ammonia smell resolves within 5-7 days.
After 12 years of research, I've only found one product that does both things we need:
Nuora Vaginal Probiotic Gummy
Now this might sound funny, but the type of pineapple actually matters because the Queen variety has 40% higher bromelain concentration than regular pineapples.
Why? Because they grow in volcanic, mineral-rich soil and intense sunlight in specific regions of Australia.
So these growing conditions stress the plant, which causes it to produce higher concentrations of protective enzymes in the stems.
And less water content means more concentrated enzymes and higher proteolytic activity.
In clinical studies, this level of bromelain dissolved up to 98% of vaginal biofilm structure which is enough to completely break down the protective barrier so the immune system can deal with the bad bacteria and good bacteria can actually colonize.
But spore-forming probiotics have nearly 100% survival rate. So the full dose actually makes it to your gut, where it seeds your vaginal microbiome through the gut-vagina axis.
Because breaking down biofilm and actually curing the problem doesn't make pharmaceutical companies money. But selling probiotics that don't work month after month does.
And I'm not saying your doctor is trying to scam you but most doctors simply aren't taught about biofilm in medical school.
Because they're taught to prescribe antibiotics for acute infections and recommend probiotics for maintenance.
But the research on biofilm has only been published in the last few years so the medical establishment just hasn't caught up. Or maybe they have, and there's no incentive to change the system.
Either way, you deserve to know the truth. — Dr. Sarah Weng
Because if you're tired of the smell coming back, tired of buying probiotics that don't work, tired of feeling like you've tried everything...
It's not your fault, it's the biofilm.
So break down the biofilm first with real bromelain from pineapple stems, then introduce probiotics that actually survive. That's the only way to stop the cycle.
